UNDERCURRENT: Florida Artists & Water

We are really honored to have recently been invited to be in a group exhibit at the FGCU Library, Archives & Special Collections. Several pieces from our 'FinFolk' collection will be included in a wonderful show about all things that matter to Florida water.
The opening reception, open to all, takes place on
Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 from 5:30 - 7:30.

Here's a bit of info from their press release:
"Southwest Florida has a unique environmental ecosystem consisting of preserves, sanctuaries, swamps, estuaries, and coastlines. Most notably, the Everglades National Park and Gulf of Mexico reside in Southwest Florida’s backyard. Water is the life blood of the region, allowing a spectacular array of flora and fauna to flourish here. UNDERCURRENT: Florida Artists & Water, features local artists and their reflections on the waters of Southwest Florida. The variety of mediums, textures and materials present in the exhibition mirror the eclectic nature of Florida’s wildlife, as well as its human inhabitants.
The artists’ works in UNDERCURRENT highlight the deep connection between the people of Southwest Florida and the local water ecosystem, an ecosystem that faces an uncertain future. The region is enduring a historically unprecedented ecological disaster in the form of a blue-green algae and red tide bloom spreading through our inland canals and coastal waters. High concentrations of red tide (Karenia brevis) are toxic to fish, marine mammals, and birds. The recurring fresh water discharges from Lake Okeechobee create a deadly environment for our marine life, fueling the blooms and threatening the delicate water ecosystems of the region. The FGCU Library humbly thanks the contributing artists for helping to bring awareness to the Southwest Florida water ecosystem and the current environmental threats in the region.
Featured artists include Charles Brown, Mary Sullivan Voytek, Amber Frank, Jeff and Dale Ocasio, Andrew Owen, and Ran Adler."

Happiness is acceptance…

We are happy to announce that two of our pieces have been accepted into two different juried art shows recently.

Teeka, the Fish belongs to our FinFolk collection, and is going to be shown in the 32nd Annual Juried All Florida Exhibit at the Alliance forthe Arts in Fort Myers, FL. The exhibition features pieces created by contemporary artists working in a wide variety of media from all over Florida and is a longtime local favorite. It’s opening reception is March 9th, from 5 to 7pm.

Our wall sculpture, The Positively Negative Day, incorporates familiar elements in our artwork: the skeleton and  the flower ---a simple characterization of new forms of life springing forth from death. We are so proud that it is being included in the Dia de los Muertos : A Celebration of Life show at the FloridaCraftArt Gallery in St Petersburg, FL.  From their website – “Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey, the show is about celebration of the lives of those passed.” The show’s opening reception is on April 6th, from 5:30 – 8:30.

We were very honored to be invited to show in a new exhibit featuring five artists who take animals to a different level. We have been working on creating our animals for the past several months, and have enjoyed their company in our studio. But, now it’s time to introduce them to everyone else. So, say “hello."

The Children's Tree Video

Hello SWFL created a video about the Children's Tree that was created during ArtFest Fort Myers last February, and did a wonderful job telling our story in a short video.

The Children’s Tree Reverie

Jeff and I installed a special art exhibit in downtown Ft Myers, in the front window of the Franklin Shops on First. The name of the exhibit is “The Children’s Tree Reverie” and features a seven-foot tree that is the culmination of a children’s community art project that we directed, during the 2017 ArtFest Fort Myers festival. Children that attended the festival were taught how to make leaves for the tree from wire and masking tape.     “The Children’s Tree Reverie” is a  how we like to imagine the weekend we spent getting kids involved with art and growing a tree, in our slightly off-kiltered way we have of imagining things. And, it’s October, so it includes some masks : -)

Here are some images of the weekend at ArtFest, the window installation, and a few of the pieces we sculpted for the exhibit.  All of the pieces for the exhibit can be viewed in our portfolio.
